As Club América seemed to reinvent itself over the years as one of the top dogs in Liga MX, Chivas took the spotlight by winning the Liga MX Apertura 2017 title. It stung the Americanistas, but as the Clausura 2017 continued one, Chivas was struggling to get any major results. The rivalry showdown on Wednesday was one that would either make or break Chivas, entirely.
The first half was a bit slow for a Liga MX rivalry of this nature. Both teams seemed timid, but interestingly, América didn’t seem to mind giving up possession to open up a counter. While both sides had their chances, the game remained 0-0 as they walked off the pitch at halftime.

The second half, however, began to open up. Chivas carried an attack where Carlos Cisneros was found wide open to slot the ball past Augustín Marchesín in the 55th minute. Chivas’ energy was gaining and Club América needed an answer, even if it were only to draw the match.
In the 71st minute, a shot bounced off of Rodolfo Cota’s hands and Oribe Peralta found himself striking in the equalizing goal. The momentum was shifting for América, and only two minutes later, Renato Ibarra scored the goal to put América up 2-1.
Club América was able to hold the result, taking away any chance for Chivas to get into the playoffs to defend their Apertura title.
