Manchester City Summer Preview: Midfield Incomings

Manchester City will be looking to add several new midfield players this summer to replace the presumably outgoing Yaya Toure and other potential exits. Yaya is trying his best to stay at the club to try and prove himself to incoming manager, Pep Guardiola, but it seems the club and Pep would like to see the Ivorian leave. Pep has been a midfield lover in his time at both Bayern Munich and Barcelona. That means City fans can expect a flurry of new signings, especially in the midfield.

But who are the ideal candidates to come into the club and take over Yaya’s midfield position? I have a few ideal signings that I believe could be huge for the club’s upcoming season as well as its future.

* Remember that these are just ideal signings, not all of these deals will happen. These are the players I believe City should chase whether it is one of them or all of them this summer. *

Ilkay Gundogan – (25 years old) Borussia Dortmund CONFIRMED

The German midfielder is included on the list, as the club has announced him as Pep’s first signing. The midfielder has struggled with injuries and is currently on the shelf, but is highly praised for his passing ability and confidence on the ball. The future of City’s attack is all about passing and pressing forward, where Gundogan thrives. Gundogan ended up being the first signing of the summer and with that could very well the best all around fit for the club. The deal is a reported 21 million pounds.

Toni Kroos – (26 years old) Real Madrid

Kroos is the latest player to be linked with City with Real Madrid seemingly wanting to offload the midfielder in the summer. Kroos has declined to comment on any speculation about a move away, but a move for the midfielder seems possible. If Real Madrid would be willing to sell the player for 25 millions euros or less, then I expect City to make a move. The German could make an instant impact and help the club in the Champions League. I see the German as a great fit for the club.

Paul Pogba – (23 years old) Juventus

In the longest running rumor that City fans are surely sick of by now, French midfielder Paul Pogba has been mentioned as a target for Pep’s revamped squad. Pogba’s fit ticks all of the boxes for the ideal replacement for Yaya Toure while being much younger. Pogba is City fans’ ideal player to bring in and if the City higher ups are willing to spend nearly 100 millions pounds to seal the deal. I expect a possible swap plus cash deal involving another midfielder here, potentially a Yaya plus cash deal.

Leroy Sane – (20 years old) FC Schalke 04

Pep is coming from the Bundesliga, a league that features many young talents that Pep has been able to watch first hand. Sane is one of the brightest German prospects and even made the Euro 2016 squad. He has told reporters that he is willing to wait until after the Euro’s to see about his options. The Left Mid could be the perfect young addition to the squad so that Raheem Sterling could stay on the left and Sane could take Jesus Navas spot on the right side. If Sane and Sterling develop, Kelechi Iheanacho will be one happy striker for the years to come.

Reece Oxford – (17 years old) West Ham

The last and youngest target that could be an ideal fit for a Pep Guardiola team is English youth player, Reece Oxford. The young player could find himself learning from some of the best midfielders in the world at City while finding some minutes on the field as Pep loves implementing youth players into his squad. Oxford has yet to officially state if he wants to leave West Ham, but a chance to play under Pep Guardiola may be enough to tempt him away from the club.
