The chart-topping Gunners have been in impressive form this campaign despite suffering numerous injuries to their attack. Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshire, Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla to name a few have all been sidelined at some point this season but nevertheless Arsenal has overcome the injury bug so far.
Arsenal has scored 34 goals in the Premiership amounting to 42 points. The surprising Leicester City are only two points away with Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United sniffing their tail.
It’s a forgone conclusion that the latter clubs will reinforce their squads to make a furious charge to the top. Arsenal should do the same to fend off the competition, especially in their attack.
Arsene Wenger’s club is being linked to two phenomenal strikers who are in scintillating form in the Bundesliga. The two forwards in question are Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bayer Leverkusen’s Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez.
Either striker would make sense for Arsenal because they have no viable back up to Olivier Giroud. If the Frenchman (and his team-leading 10 goals) goes down to injury that could spell trouble.
Priority number 1 should be Aubameyang because of his goal-scoring prowess (24 goals) and ability to create his own shot. He’s not as reliant as Chicharito to be set up for goals. The 26-year-old Dortmund striker has tremendous speed and pace to go along with Arsenal’s speedy wingers. Not to mention Aubameyang is a sneaky good playmaker who would immediately gel with the rest of the Gunners.
Chicharito has rediscovered his lethal form with Leverkusen scoring 19 goals in 20 games in all competitions. He has won back-to-back player of the month in his first 2 months in the Bundesliga. His constant movement and quickness makes him a nightmare for defenders. His mobility in attack will make Arsenal’s tremendous passers even more dangerous. An extra incentive is that the 27-year-old is familiar with the Premier League game and had a successful time with Man U.
Aubameyang has a high price tag but according to The Sun, Arsenal is eyeing a £42m move for the Gabon international. He would surely increase the Gunners chances of ending their 12-year EPL title drought. Chicharito’s transfer fee has reportedly surfaced at a more affordable £25m but Bayer’s sporting director Rudi Voller has vehemently denied that Hernandez is for sale.
According to the Independent’s Kevin Palmer, Chicharito would not be eligible to play for Arsenal until the next campaign because he’s played for 2 clubs this season. This makes Chicharito’s move pointless for the Gunners if the objective is to win this season. A move in the summer makes more sense. Chicharito is itching for another shot at the Premier League but will have to wait until next season.
Aubameyang is the clear favorite over Chicharito and is a considerable upgrade over Giroud in my opinion. Wenger should not hesitate and splurge on Dortmund’s prolific striker especially after the rumored capture of Basel’s Mohamed Elneny. The Arsenal boss is reportedly seeking to only make two signings in the transfer window.
Cazorla, Sanchez and Wilshire are close to full fitness, which will strengthen the roster further. Pair those players with the EPL’s leading assist man Mesut Ozil (16 assists) and Arsenal will have a formidable arsenal (pun intended!).
