In one of the most shocking transfer news stories over the past two seasons, Bernardo Silva has signed for Manchester City. Ok you caught me, he hasn’t “technically” been able to join the club yet since the window opens on July 1, but he will be a Citizen starting on that day. Silva will take up the number 20 shirt for City which was last occupied by Eliaquim Mangala who is currently on loan at Valencia in La Liga. Safe to say that he is probably on the way out once he saw his number was given to a new signing.
The deal struck between City and Monaco is believed to be around £43 million, which is a huge fee for any player, but it seems to be the way the market is shifting now with big clubs seemingly swapping huge name players for astronomical amounts of money. The Silva deal is believed to be in direct correlation with the departing Jesus Navas who is believed to be heading back to Spain to play for his boyhood club again in Sevilla.
While at Monaco, he played on the right side as both a right winger and a right midfielder. To say there is now lots of young depth on the right side of the attacking third at City would now be an understatement. Both Silva and Raheem Sterling will see plenty of minutes now with Pep’s attacking system designed to create as many chances as possible.
In his still very young career, Silva has accomplished a ton for his club and country. He has already won the treble during the 2013-14 season in Portugal while he played at Benfica. The very same year, he was named the Portuguese League Breakout Player of the year. For Country, he was on the Portugal Runner up team for the U-21 EURO’s in 2015. He has been named to two team of the tournament teams during the EURO U-19 Championship in 2013, and the EURO U-21 team in 2015. This year he has won the Ligue 1 Title with Monaco and was named to the Ligue Team of the season. For a 22 year old, Silva brings a lot to the table for this City side.
On a side note, this summer while Manchester City tour the US, we will hopefully get to see commentators from around the globe confuse David Silva with Bernardo Silva. Luckily Bernardo Silva will have Bernardo on the back of his shirt. The new Silva will wear number 20, while David wears his famous 21.
What do you think of this move for Manchester City? Personally, I think it is a brilliant move for Pep. He is getting younger, hungrier players into what was an aging squad. Silva will bring a new look to the wing for City and if we have learned anything from Pep, we may see this lad all over the field in a number of different positions. Pep loves doing his business early so if you think Silva is the last bit of business we will see until July, think again.
