Goals from Paulinho and Thiago Silva claimed a 2-0 win for Brazil over Serbia that saw them win Group E.

It was somewhat of a scrappy performance from the five-time winners and Gabriel Jesus had the best of the chances that were few and far between in the opening exchanges. The Manchester City talisman failed to beat Vladimir Stojković in the Serbian goal on both occasions.

There were worrying scenes when Marcelo was forced to limp off just 10 minutes in; the 30-year-old is a pivotal part of the Seleção set-up and will be in a rush to return for the last-16 tie.

A rare opening landed to the feet of Aleksandar Mitrović in the 34th minute, but the target-man could only volley over with his back to goal.

His team paid for his miss just two minutes later when Paulinho opened the scoring after latching onto a delicious pass from Coutinho. The Barcelona duo linked up in sublime fashion with Paulinho poking past the outrushing Stojković.

Mitrović had a stringful of chances in the second half, but Alison stood strong to keep the Fulham man out and his country on top of the group.

Thiago Silva then doubled the lead on 68 minutes when his diagonal run towards the front post created enough space to nod home a Neymar corner.

Neymar himself had opportunities to get on the scoresheet, but it wasn’t to be his night.

This is an awkward Brazil team who are difficult to create clear chances against and they will be a real challenge for Mexico in Samara on Monday.
