Islam Slimani’s Double Places Sporting CP In First

The Algerian forward scored two vital home goals for Sporting Lisbon against northern rivals FC Porto at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon Portugal. Sporting Lisbon’s 2-0 victory over their northern rivals Porto allowed Sporting to leap frog over Porto into first place in Liga Sagres. Sporting’s top goal scorer, Islam Slimani, has tallied ten goals in Liga Sagres and his double against Porto has placed the Algerian striker second in Portugal’s leading goal scorers list.

Islam Slimani took the lead for the hosts inside 27 minutes when he rose above everyone in the Portista box and nodded a Jefferson Nascimento free kick pass iconic Spain international Iker Casillas for the first goal. The visitors almost drew level with their hosts when Vincent Aboubakar was denied by an amazing save by Sporting keeper Rui Patricio. The hosts should have had more goals but were denied by the post on two occasions. Sporting captain Adrien Silva sent a low effort off Casillas’ post, along with the Algerian Slimani who saw his bouncing header hit the crossbar.

Sporting Lisbon although was the stronger side of the two; would eventually seal their victory in the 85th minute. Los Ticos (Costa Rican) Talisman Bryan Ruiz slotted a beautiful through ball for Islam Slimani to easily dispatch the ball pass Casillas to kill the game off at 2-0.

Sporting Boss Jorge Jesus‘ side delivered Porto their first defeat since January of 2015. Sporting Lisbon currently sits in first place in Liga Sagres with 38 points and Porto now dropped to second behind Sporting by only two points. FC Porto’s manager, Julen Lopetegui stated in a post game press conference “We have more points than last year and have to continue to back ourselves to come back and win more games.”

Sporting’s next matchup comes midweek and has the “Leoes” traveling to the southern part of the Lisbon region to the city of Setubal. Vitoria de Setubal who currently is in fifth place in the Liga Sagres will entertain Sporting Lisbon.
