The Edinson Cavani show continued over at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille, France as Unai Emery’s Paris Saint-Germain inflicted more misery on a sorry season for Frederic Antonetti’s Lille OSC, 1-0, in Ligue 1 play. Cavani scored a rocket in the 65th minute of play for his ninth of the season to lead all goalscorers.
The scoreline will go down as quite flattering for the hosts, as Paris dominated a number of categories, including possession (65.9% to 34.1%), shots (17 to 10), shots on target (seven to one), successful pass percentage (84.9% to 72.5%) passes (590 to 298) and corners taken (four to two).
“It was not an easy game against a Lille side that defended well,” said Emery. “Even if we created numerous chances in the first half, we didn’t manage to put them away. But we maintained the same rhythm after the interval. Though we lacked a clinical edge, I’m happy, because we created a lot of chances. It’s important for our confidence to reclaim second place.”
“You saw a better Paris than the one against Marseille last Sunday,” argued PSG defender Marquinhos to Canal+. “We were more in control and more aggressive than against Marseille. Lille managed to create some situations from set-pieces. From our side, we created a lot of chances, and we ended up settling it after the break. It’s up to us to find new options to beat these teams who play in a very compact manner.”
“You have to focus on the three points,” said defender Thomas Meunier. “It’s not easy against a side that is so compact and plays so deep. We managed to put away one of our chances, and that is what made the difference. Personally, I felt very good, especially in the second half.”
“We played very well, we dominated the game,” affirmed PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi. “We had possession and created opportunities. We’re aware we can do better. This evening, our performance was in a similar vein to that we produced against Marseille. We had a lot of chances, and we gave them very few. The difference was that we scored.”
