Ligue 1: PSG Tune Up For Barcelona With Big Win Over Bordeaux

The jury may still be out on Paris Saint-Germain‘s chances of scalping FC Barcelona in the first leg of the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League Round of 16. But even so, Unai Emery’s men will come into the Valentine’s Day tie on the heels of a 3-0 shutout win over Jocelyn Gourvennec’s Girondins de Bordeaux at the Matmut Atlantique.

El Matador, Edinson Cavani, was simply playing like El Matador, scoring a brace in the sixth and 47th minutes. He notched his 78th goal for PSG equalling his total output with former club Napoli. Also on the scoresheet was Angel Di Maria in the 40th minute of play.

After getting dominated early on the match statistics, PSG eventually wore out Bordeaux, winning the battles on possession (58 percent to 42 percent), shots (six to five), shots on target (five to two), successful passes (89.7 percent to 86 percent) and passes (399 to 285) with Bordeaux earning the lone corner.

Key to the outcome were the return of goalkeeper Kevin Trapp and midfielder Marco Verratti, the latter of whom was subbed out at the hour mark for Christopher Nkunku to keep the Italian stallion fresh for Barça. Nkunku, Hatem Ben Arfa and Julian Draxler came in late in the second half to manage the lead. Here’s some key info from our mate, OptaJean.

With the win, PSG will maintain their hold on second place in Ligue 1 regardless of the outcomes of the weekend’s slate of contests. Aside from their test match with Lionel Messi and FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain have some unfinished business against Pascal Dupraz’s Toulouse FC and will come into next weekend’s reverse fixture at Le Parc des Princes ready and highly motivated to make a strong statement to title rivals AS Monaco and OGC Nice as February rumbles on across all of France.
