On Friday, Bruce Arena‘s Los Angeles Galaxy began plans for the 2016 Major League Soccer season with preseason check-ups and workouts. The Galaxy were one of a number of clubs that began their preseason on Friday and have three opponents on the ledger, all from the West Coast, all rivals in one form or another.

“It’s nice to be back home, for sure, there’s a certain familiarity for me, but from the moment I stepped in here, it’s been a first class operation,” said goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. “I guess I shouldn’t expect anything less looking from the outside in, but being on the inside is really special, and I’m looking to make the most of it.

“My goal is to help the team as much as I can. For a goalkeeper, you’re always measured individually by how well the team does and how many clean sheets you can get. That’s really the focus. It’s important that we get our right foot forward, and we solve whatever issues that we have early on because those games are going to come quick. The first game against Santos is going to be competitive, and we have to be ready.”

Meanwhile, the Columbus Crew signed Danish dynamo Emil Larsen, adding depth to their attack that includes Cedrick Mabwati, Justin Meram and Ethan Finlay.

“When we’re looking at our roster and looking at that attacking midfield position – whether it’s left, center or right – we look for different profiles,” Crew head coach and sporting director Gregg Berhalter said. “He fits a different profile than what we have. He’s a very good dribbler, very good passer, and we think he’s going to add another dimension to our attack.

“Cedrick is a guy who’s very good one-on-one, likes to stay wide. Justin likes to hang out in the pocket and get the ball and turn. Ethan is a guy that likes to go behind. Now you have those profiles, and with Emil you have a guy who’s also in the pocket, but from that pocket is good at penetrating. Everyone wants to be on a good team. To have a good team, you need good players. That’s part of it. We’re trying to make a deep team and a better team than last year.”
