Messi and Ronaldo Favorites For Ballon D’Or

A picture taken on December 15, 2014 shows pictures of (LtoR) Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, Germany's Manuel Neuer and Argentina's Lionel Messi reflecting themselves in the Ballon d'Or 2014 trophy displayed at the Mellerio jewelery workshops in Paris. Barcelona's Argentinian forward Lionel Messi, Bayern Munich's Gemany's goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and Real Madrid's Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo were shortlisted for this year's Fifa Ballon d'Or, an association football award given annually to the male player who is considered to have performed the best in the previous year. Messi and Ronaldo Favorites For Ballon D’Or

FIFA has officially released the 23-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or award. Each year soccer’s governing body nominates some of the brightest footballers in the world and awards the golden boot to the most outstanding player for their achievements in the previous calendar year.

The winner is nominated by national team coaches and captains and some journalists as well.

The award should be renamed to “who was better between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?” Since 2010 when the bi-weekly publication France Football’s Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year merged, Messi (3) and Ronaldo (2) are the only two players that have won the coveted award. Before the merger both received World Player of the Year titles in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

It seems kind of pointless to have 21 hopefuls in the running for the award. Messi and Ronaldo will be going head-to-head for the golden boot for the foreseeable future. This year will no different.

The favorite should be Messi. “La pulga bionica” scored 43 goals for Barcelona en route to the club’s second treble in its history. On the national team scale he helped Argentina reach the final in the Copa America. The tricky winger had a bounce back year after he was slowed down with injuries. This season he picked up a serious injury and is currently sidelined.  Also a tax evasion scandal continues to hover over the three-time Ballon d’Or recipient.

Ronaldo on the other hand terrorized opposing goals last season. He scored an astounding 48 goals in league play. He became Real Madrid’s all-time scorer surpassing numerous club legends. Arguably soccer’s most complete striker, he will surely continue to punish teams in 2015. He’s off to a slow start by his standards with 6 goals in La Liga but look for his tally to increase as the season moves on.

I’m curious to see who you guys would choose between these two outstanding players. Their names reverberate throughout soccer circles across the world. It looks like it will be another match-up between the two super stars for soccer supremacy.
