Mexico will look to maintain its spot in first place in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying this September, as they will face Panama (Sept. 1) and Costa Rica (Sept. 5). Notching one more win will guarantee Mexico a ticket to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, so getting a result could be huge moving forward to October.

Here are the names Juan Carlos Osorio has called…

Keepers: Guillermo Ochoa, José de Jesús Corona, Rodolfo Cota

Defenders: Edson Álvarez, Hugo Ayala, Héctor Moreno, Néstor Araujo, Jair Pereira, Diego Reyes, Jesús Dueñas, Jesús Gallardo

Midfielders: Andrés Guardado, Jonathan dos Santos, Erick Gutiérrez, Héctor Herrera, Javier Aquino, Jürgen Damm, Orbelín Pineda

Mexico Carlos Vela Javier Hernandez Hirving Lozano

Forwards: Tecatito, Giovani dos Santos, Raúl Jiménez, Chicharito, Elias Hernández, Carlos Vela, Hirving Lozano

The list called up by Osorio has some unsurprising regulars, but also some omissions that are a bit of a head scratcher. One of Mexico’s best players in the Gold Cup was Rodolfo Pizzaro, yet, Osorio left him off for the qualifiers in place of Giovani dos Santos, who hasn’t been playing with his club.

Gael Sandoval and Omar Govea would have been good additions to this roster, especially with their contributions with their clubs as of late. Outside of a few other names, it is good to see Edson Álvarez earn a call. Since Rafael Márquez is about as close as he’s ever been to retiring due to his off-field situation, Edson will be a good defender/center-midfielder to fill in.

Mexico will face Panama on September 1 at home in the Estadio Azteca.
