MLS: Curt Onalfo Takes Over As LA Galaxy Manager, Expansion Draft Takes Place

CARSON, CA - MAY 26: Robbie Rogers #14 of Los Angeles Galaxy talks with assistant coach Curt Onalfo before coming into the game against Seattle Sounders FC in the second half at The Home Depot Center on May 26, 2013 in Carson, California. Curt Onalfo, formerly the manager for the LA Galaxy II, has been given one of the toughest assignments in Major League Soccer: that of LA Galaxy first team manager. At a press conference at the StubHub Center, it was announced that Onalfo was essentially promoted after Bruce Arena had been chosen to fill in as the USA Men’s National Team manager. Knowing how he was a disaster with D.C. United, it will be interesting to see how Onalfo and new general manager Peter Vagenas manage LA’s 2017 list.

Meanwhile, the other Uniteds in the comp, Atlanta United and Minnesota United, have made their Expansion Draft selections. They are provisionally on the lists, though, due to the ongoing trade window allowing teams to potentially retain those lost to Atlanta and Minnesota if the situation arises.

Atlanta United
1. Donny Toia – Montreal Impact
2. Zach Loyd – FC Dallas
3. Clint Irwin – Toronto FC
4. Mikey Ambrose – Orlando City
5. Alec Kahn – Sporting Kansas City

Minnesota United
1. Chris Duvall – New York Red Bulls
2. Collin Warner – Houston Dynamo
3. Mohammad Saeid – Columbus Crew
4. Jeff Attinella – Real Salt Lake
5. Femi Hollinger-Janzen – New England Revolution

Hours after selecting Duvall first, Minnesota traded Duvall and general allocation money to the Montreal Impact in exchange for Johan Venegas. Going back to LA, roster moves have been made. The club have exercised contract options on 11 players: defender Ashley Cole, midfielder Rafael Garcia, midfielder Baggio Husidic, defender Daniel Steres, goalkeeper Clement Diop, forward Bradford Jamieson IV, defender Dave Romney, forward Jose Villarreal, forward Ariel Lassiter, midfielder Raul Mendiola and forward Jack McBean. The club chose not to exercise its contract option on Brazilian Leonardo, who has been a chronic liability on defense for years and a main reason behind an inferior defense that has cost the Galaxy key results in 2016.

Continuing the wheelings and dealings, Miguel Aguilar has been acquired from D.C. United to go with a 2019 Natural Fourth Round MLS SuperDraft pick in exchange for LA’s 2018 4th Round MLS SuperDraft pick. As for preseason, the Galaxy and Dominic Kinnear’s San Jose Earthquakes are hooking up for a preseason meeting on Feb. 11, 2017 at Cashman Field in Las Vegas, Nev. The Galaxy were victorious last season over their California Clasico rivals, 1-0. Currently, LA is heading to Europe for a special postseason tour. Finallythis is going on in Seattle.
