A player that has truly been all around Europe to play his football is former Barcelona youngster Bojan Krkic. The 26-year-old Spainard has played in Spain (Barcelona), Italy (Roma/ AC Milan), Netherlands (Ajax), and of course England (Stoke City).
But now the striker will head off on loan for the remainder of the season to Mainz 05 in Germany’s Bundesliga. The move should come as no surprise after the arrival of another attacking player, Saido Berahino this window, which will see Bojan’s lack of playing time, only decrease for the rest of the season.
Bojan was once known as a very promising player who had loads of potential for Barcelona and made over 100 appearances for the club. However, his time at Barcelona came to an end in 2011 after he failed to solidify a first team place (which is near impossible now at Barcelona with so much talent coming in at the club), and he opted to move to Italy with Roma.
After a year at the club, he was still not getting all of the minutes he needed to develop so he was loaned to AC Milan for the 2013-14 season where he only made 19 appearances and scored only 3 goals for the club. Milan had the option to buy him outright after the loan and declined. So Roma sold him back to Barcelona for 13 million euros and loaned him out immediately to Ajax where he had 24 appearances and 4 goals.
The following season, Mark Hughes and Stoke City brought him in from Barcelona and he made 52 total appearances since that signing. So he has not made a lasting impression since that time and was unable to make that talent translate in the EPL. That being said, he was able to score 14 goals in that time. But his time at Stoke has probably come to an end after the player left for Mainz for the remainder of the season.
If Bojan can find his form and show that he can thrive in a new environment, that can not only help him try and rekindle his career at Stoke City, but could find him a better suited club next season, and help Stoke repay their wallets a little bit more with a Bojan sale. I do not know what will happen with Bojan once his loan expires at the end of the season, in his thank you letter to the Potters fans, he states,
“For the time being, this isn’t a goodbye to Stoke City, it’s just a ‘see you soon’…”
Will we see Stoke bring back Bojan and give him another shot? Or will wee see him go in the summer on a permanent deal?
