The Wanda Derby: Italy’s Newest Derby

Italy’s newest derby is like the work of an old school Hollywood soap opera or telenovela, The Wanda Derby. The Wanda Derby is the matchup between Inter Milan and Torino, specifically whenever Maxi Lopez and Mauro Icardi face off against each other. Maxi Lopez and Mauro Icardi were both at one-point teammates at Sampdoria from 2012-2013, in fact at that one point in time the two were considered best friends. Icardi was eventually sold off to Inter Milan in November of 2013 where he’s become a star.

Maxi Lopez during this time was having troubles with his wife, Argentinean media personality Wanda Nara. The story then would take a wild turn, like a plot line from “Days of our Lives” or “Lola la Trailera,” Wanda had a separate relationship with her husband’s (Maxi Lopez) best friend and former colleague, Mauro Icardi. Maxi Lopez and Wanda Nara announced their divorce proceedings immediately in December of 2013. Icardi made things worst for himself when he announced his love for Wanda Nara, which destroyed the friendship between him and Maxi.

Inter Milan and Sampdoria faced off against each other in April 2014. When the two former friends met each other to shake hands before the match Lopez snubbed Icardi’s hand. The press immediately dubbed the match, the “Wanda Derby.” Eventually Mauro Icardi went on to marry Wanda Nara late May of 2014 not long after Wanda’s divorce with Maxi Lopez was finalized.

Maxi Lopez eventually left Sampdoria for Chievo Verona for a season and hence the “Wanda Derby” moved from Sampdoria v Inter Milan to Chievo v Inter Milan. Whenever Maxi Lopez confronts Icardi for a match for the pre-match handshake, Lopez always snubs Icardi. The Derby eventually did move again when Maxi Lopez signed for Torino in January 2015.

The recent match of the “Wanda Derby” occurred two weeks ago and again Maxi snubbed Icardi’s hand, this time Lopez put his hand in his crotch instead of shaking Mauro’s hand. The “Wanda Derby” will continue on as long as these two competitors remain in the same league, one thing is certain they will never be able to play alongside each other again.
